The Next Global Crisis Could Be About Food

When people in the United States hear the word El Niño, images of excessive rainfall, huge blizzards, and super storms often come to mined. In other parts of the world, this weather phenomenon is experienced very differently, causing droughts. The drought caused by El Niño in southern Africa, has caused catastrophic crop failures, raised the price of essential foods, and widened economic inequity.

El Niño is a cyclical warming of the earth’s oceans that has been affecting weather patterns for a long time, but climate change and global warming are exacerbating its effect. Scientists predict that in the near future extreme weather phenomena will be more frequent and cause massive droughts, crop failures, and food crises in more parts of the world.
