On January 7, the world was horrified to learn an attack on French newspaper Charlie Hebdo had claimed the lives of 12 people, including police, journalists, and cartoonists. Many called the attack “France’s 9/11.”

But rather than respond to hate and intolerance in kind, the French took to the streets in a peaceful unity march. Rallying at the Place de la République in Paris, thousands gathered to express solidarity with the victims and spread a message of peace with the help of John Lennon’s song Imagine.
